Progression presents a survey of sculptures by Ben Fasham spanning more than fifteen years of practice. The exhibition reveals the evolution of Ben’s sculptural language, tracing the development of ideas that explore balance, form and the inherent possibilities of material.
Working primarily in stainless steel, Ben approaches sculpture through a deeply practical process. Rather than beginning with drawings, his concepts emerge through the making of maquettes, allowing proportion, tension and balance to be resolved directly in three dimensions. This hands on approach reflects Ben’s background in carpentry and fabrication, where the act of making becomes integral to the development of the final form.
Across the works in Progression, recurring elements signal shifts in Ben’s thinking over time. Early sculptures frequently incorporated a disc element, a motif that became synonymous with Ben’s work. In later pieces this evolved into the sphere, which functions both as a visual anchor and as a grounding component within the sculptural structure.
The open fretwork in earlier sculptures introduced rhythm, lightness and the interplay of space within the forms. As the work developed, these structural explorations gave way to increasing refined investigations of balance and material tension, where solid geometric forms interact in carefully poised relationships.
Throughout the exhibition, Ben’s sculptures demonstrate a continual testing of the material itself. Stainless steel is pushed and manipulated to its limits, creating forms that appear both precise and fluid. The linished finish enhances the movement of light across the surface, giving the sculptures a sense of flow and vitality.
Together, the works in Progression reveal an artist engaged in an ongoing exploration of form, balance and material, a practice defined by experimentation, refinement and the quiet confidence of a maker deeply connected to the process of construction.
